It is a few days after Veteran’s Day, and I just received word that a client of mine who is a veteran was accepted for social security disability.
He is a relatively young man, 33, who served in Iraq and suffered mental and physical injuries while serving our country. He saw comrades killed in action and was the victim of an IED that damaged his hand, arm, back and neck. He has also struggled with severe PTSD. His wife came home as he was preparing to hang himself.
He waited over one year before having a hearing to determine his disability. During that time, he and his family became homeless and were living in their car. When I talked to him today to tell him he was accepted and deemed disabled, I heard the tears through the phone as he thanked me. I immediately corrected him and told him it was me who needed to thank him. He should hold his head up high, with honor, for serving our country. Thankfully, our country made the right decision and is going to start to serve him.
Remember to thank our veterans everyday and not just on November 11. They’ve earned it.
